Safe & Sound
Safe & Sound is written from a child’s perspective and focuses on a family moving into a shelter. The book walks a child through the process of being in a shelter and what to expect while in the shelter. It serves as a supportive tool that shows what to expect, what they may encounter, and how a shelter can and should be looked at as a positive and temporary housing situation.
About me
My name is Tandalaya Sims-Cochran, a local author of a new children’s book. As a Substance Abuse Counselor and Domestic Violence Counselor with over twenty years of experience working with families in and out of various shelters, I noticed when entering into a shelter the families focus tend to be on the adults needs only.
I recognized that not only were the adults experiencing emotions around being placed in the shelter, but that children were as well and were also in need of support. It was an encounter with one of these children that inspired me to write this children’s book.

"I've been working in shelters and halfway houses for the better part of 20 years," Sims-Cochran says. "When children come in to our shelters, they're shy at first. Within a week, they want to talk. They're confused about why they're in this situation. After seeing this for so many years, I decided to put it on paper."
